Neon Burst Dogwood with green and yellow leaves

Discover More Information On Neon Burst™ Dogwood

This Tatarian dogwood is a compact selection with attractive chartreuse foliage. Both sun and heat tolerant, it retains bright leaf color throughout summer. New leaves are tinged with bronze, and the stems have a rich red hue early in the season. Fall foliage becomes a rainbow of purple, red, yellow, and orange. In winter the stems turn glossy scarlet red. Unlike most C. alba, Neon Burst™ works well as a specimen plant or in large groupings. From Bylands Nursery in British Columbia.

Plant Attributes

The Neon Burst™ Dogwood (Cornus alba) is a stunning deciduous shrub that is highly prized for its vibrant foliage and impressive ornamental features. This striking plant is a result of selective breeding, designed to bring out the best attributes of the dogwood family. Perfect for adding a pop of color to any garden or landscape, the Neon Burst™ Dogwood boasts a number of unique and eye-catching attributes that set it apart from other dogwood varieties.

One of the most notable characteristics of the Neon Burst™ Dogwood is its vivid foliage. During the spring and summer months, the shrub produces bright lime-green leaves that create a stunning contrast against the darker shades of green found in most garden settings. As the seasons progress, the leaves gradually transition to an array of brilliant yellow, orange, and red hues, bringing a burst of color to the autumn landscape. This vibrant display of foliage color makes the Neon Burst™ Dogwood a highly desirable addition to any garden looking to add some visual interest and seasonal color.

In addition to its striking foliage, the Neon Burst™ Dogwood also produces small, inconspicuous white flowers in late spring. While not as showy as the blooms of other dogwood varieties, these delicate flowers still contribute to the plant's overall appeal. As the flowers fade, clusters of small, white berries known as drupes appear, providing an important food source for birds and other wildlife throughout the winter months.

The Neon Burst™ Dogwood is a relatively compact shrub, typically reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) with a similar spread. This size makes it ideal for use as a specimen plant, in borders, or as part of a mixed planting. The shrub's compact growth habit and adaptability also make it suitable for use in urban gardens or in areas with limited space. The Neon Burst™ Dogwood is hardy in USDA zones 2 through 7, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of climates.

Overall, the Neon Burst™ Dogwood is a remarkable plant that brings a unique combination of vibrant foliage, subtle flowers, and wildlife-friendly berries to any garden setting. Its adaptability, compact size, and low maintenance requirements make it a great choice for gardeners looking to add a splash of color and visual interest to their landscape throughout the year.

Planting & Care

Planting and caring for the Neon Burst™ Dogwood is relatively straightforward, as it is a low-maintenance and adaptable shrub. To help your plant thrive, follow these planting and care guidelines:

  1. Site selection: Choose a location in your garden with full sun to partial shade. While the Neon Burst™ Dogwood can tolerate a range of light conditions, its foliage color will be most vibrant when grown in full sun. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as dogwoods are susceptible to root rot in poorly-draining conditions.
  2. Soil preparation: Before planting, amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil structure and fertility. This will help to promote strong root growth and overall plant health.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole that is slightly wider and just as deep as the root ball of your Neon Burst™ Dogwood. Gently remove the plant from its container, taking care not to damage the roots. Place the shrub in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Fill in the hole with the amended soil, gently firming it down to eliminate any air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
  4. Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch (5-7.5 cm) layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded bark, around the base of the plant. This will help to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to avoid encouraging pests and diseases.
  5. Watering: Water your Neon Burst™ Dogwood regularly, especially during the first year after planting, to help establish a strong root system. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, the shrub will have some drought tolerance but will perform best with consistent moisture.
  6. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring, following the manufacturer's instructions for application rates. This will help to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage color.
  7. Pruning: Prune the Neon Burst™ Dogwood in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This will encourage a more compact and bushy growth habit, as well as maintain the shrub's overall health. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and trim back approximately one-third of the oldest stems to ground level to stimulate new growth.
  8. Pest and disease management: While the Neon Burst™ Dogwood is relatively pest and disease-resistant, it's essential to monitor for any signs of issues such as leaf spot, powdery mildew, or insect infestations. If any problems arise, treat them promptly with appropriate cultural practices or chemical controls, if necessary.

By following these planting and care guidelines, your Neon Burst™ Dogwood will thrive and provide your garden with vibrant color and visual interest for many years to come.
