Autumn Blaze Maple. Tree with bright orange and red colors

Discover More Information On Autumn Blaze Maple

For those who want a pop of red color in the fall, you should choose the Autumn Blaze Maple tree (Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffersred’). This tree will provide spectacular color throughout the autumn season. Once the cool weather arrives, the maple’s five-inch leaves begin to turn at the top of the tree. The beautiful color seeps down the entire tree’s length as it is showered in bright red and orange-red hues. The Autumn Blaze Red Maple’s color starts earlier and lasts longer than other tree varieties.

Plant Attributes

The Autumn Blaze maple growth rate is fast. This species is a cross between the fast-growing Silver maple and the intense color of the Red maple. In fact, this tree is the most popular maple variety in the country. While it has a brilliant appearance in the fall, the maple still looks great during the wintertime. With its evenly placed ascending branches, the overall profile of the tree is symmetrical.

Landscape Use

This Autumn Blaze Maple can be placed in a variety of settings. It is best used as a single tree in a yard or grouped with several trees to line a driveway or fence. With its symmetric oval canopy, it works well in rustic or contemporary designed landscapes.

This maple tree species makes an excellent choice for those who want uniformed shade trees in a large yard or along a street. In fact, many city designers choose this tree to line busy highways and roadways since the Autumn Blaze is adaptable to many urban settings.

For those more formal settings, the Autumn Blaze is a perfect supplemental piece for parking lots or to screen out those undesirable views. When planted in long rows, these trees make an excellent choice to define property lines. Maturity comes quickly for these trees, and they can grow as fast as three feet per year when planted under the right conditions.

These trees should be planted 20 feet apart on center. If you want to add an Autumn Blaze maple as a single tree, there must be at least 40 feet of space around the trunk. This maple is ideal for large scale plantings. With its fast growth rate, you can have natural cover and great color in no time. The Autumn Blaze will stand out when mixed with evergreens or other deciduous trees that produce a yellow color in the fall.

Planting & Care

The Autumn Blaze can adapt to most soil conditions. It will need regular water for the best results. While it can tolerate drought conditions, this tree does need well-draining soil. This maple tree is disease and pest resistant. With its strong branches, the maple can even resist snow damage from heavy winter snows.

If you want to keep those branches looking great, the tree needs to be pruned. Pruning can eliminate double leaders if done when the tree is young. For those who decide to prune the tree, it should be performed in late winter. During this season, the tree is dormant. However, you can also prune in late spring to keep the tree healthy.

With the Autumn Blaze, fertilizing should be avoided in the first year after planting. For those older trees, you will want to feed in the early spring or fall. Fertilizers that are high in nitrogen are the best choices for this species of tree.

The Autumn Blaze does not produce any flowers, and there is limited samara seed production. You will not have to worry about seeds or flowers clogging up your home’s gutters with this tree.
