Plant Attributes
The Lo & Behold Blue Chip butterfly bush will provide your garden with fragrant, purple-blue blooms without the need to deadhead them. For that reason, this bush is a favorite of many homeowners and landscapers. You can enjoy this butterfly bush throughout the season. In the spring, Lo & Behold’s silver-green leaves will start to appear, and once summer comes around, the purple-blue blossoms will open.
Landscape Use
The Lo & Behold Blue Chip butterfly bush is small and versatile. It is the perfect bush to add to containers or use in mixed flower borders. Lo & Behold also makes a tremendous deciduous ground cover for your landscape. This fragrant bush is a favorite of butterflies, but it will repel deer. It provides your space with purple-blue blooms that will last from the spring to the first frost of the fall.
Planting & Care
Since this is a miniature buddleia, the Lo & Behold will make a great addition to your landscape, especially for those who want to enjoy hummingbirds and butterflies from a patio or deck. The small shrub will not grow more than two and a half feet tall and wide, and it is the perfect plant for container thrillers or garden beds. This butterfly bush is a great choice for those who need erosion control due to its low ground growth. Like most buddleias, this bush will complement other drought-tolerant shrubs in various colors, such as those with orange or yellow blooms.
This butterfly shrub requires full sun for six hours per day. It can handle planting in the cold USDA zone 5, but it can also take the heat up to zone 9. The Lo & Behold will thrive in any soil type as long as it is a good draining mixture. For the best results with this bush, you will need to keep it consistently moist throughout the first year after planting. Once the plant is fully established, it is tolerant of heat, humidity, and drought conditions.
This fragrant butterfly bush is easy to maintain. The Lo & Behold will stay under three feet without much pruning. However, it could reach up to six feet in warmer climates. You will need to prune the bush at least once a year when new leaves start to form near the base. The Lo & Behold will bloom from mid-summer to mid-fall. Since it is sterile, you will not have to set seedlings. In the colder climates, the shrub may die back, but it returns in the spring.
