Plant Attributes

Flip Side® Chastetree is a unique plant resulting from a cross between Vitex trifolia 'Purpurea' and V. agnus-castus. It showcases a combination of the best characteristics from both parent plants, along with a more compact growth habit. This variety produces stunning 8-inch panicles of fragrant, deep purple flowers that serve as an irresistible attraction for a continuous stream of pollinators. One notable feature is its ability to rebloom abundantly.

The name "Flip Side®" refers to the plant's distinct foliage. The greyish olive-green leaves exhibit a dusky purple coloration on their lower surface. While the 'Purpurea' parent plant is typically hardy only in Zone 9, Flip Side® has shown consistent hardiness in Zone 7, expanding its growing range. With a height range of 6 to 8 feet and a width of 8 to 10 feet, this chastetree variety possesses an upright, arching habit.

Flip Side® thrives in full sun exposure, maximizing its potential for flower production. Its striking dark purple blooms contrast beautifully with the green foliage. This plant is known for its resilience in heat, making it suitable for gardens and landscapes in Heat Zone 9. Overall, Flip Side® Chastetree is an eye-catching and pollinator-friendly addition to garden spaces, offering a blend of attractive flowers, unique foliage, and improved hardiness compared to its parent plants.

Planting & Care

When planting and caring for Flip Side® Chastetree, consider the following guidelines:

  1. Planting Requirements: Choose a location that receives full sun exposure, as Flip Side® Chastetree thrives in bright sunlight. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging. The plant is generally hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 7-9, but it has shown greater hardiness than its 'Purpurea' parent, surviving in Zone 7 as well.
  2. Planting Process: Dig a hole that is wider and slightly shallower than the root ball of the plant. Gently loosen the roots before placing the plant in the hole. Backfill the hole with soil, firming it gently around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
  3. Watering: Initially, provide regular watering to help the plant establish itself. Once established, Flip Side® Chastetree is relatively drought-tolerant, but it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as the plant prefers well-drained soil.
  4. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, around the base of the plant. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture-related issues.
  5. Pruning: Flip Side® Chastetree generally requires minimal pruning. However, you can prune in early spring to shape the plant or remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning can also help promote a more compact growth habit and encourage better flowering.
  6. Fertilization: In early spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs according to the manufacturer's instructions. This provides essential nutrients for healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid excessive fertilization, as it may lead to leggy growth.
  7. Winter Protection: While Flip Side® Chastetree is hardy in Zone 7 and above, providing some winter protection in colder regions can help safeguard the plant. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to insulate the roots and protect them from freezing temperatures.
  8. Pest and Disease Control: Flip Side® Chastetree is generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, it's a good practice to monitor the plant for any signs of common garden pests like aphids or spider mites. If necessary, use organic pest control methods or consult with a local gardening expert for appropriate solutions.

Remember to adapt these care instructions to the specific conditions of your garden and climate. Regular monitoring, maintenance, and providing optimal growing conditions will help ensure the health and longevity of your Flip Side® Chastetree.
